Herbal Treasures in your Backyard

Forgive me, for this may all sound naive, but I honestly did not know that the source of most of the hair and skin products we buy in stores are derived from easily accessible herbs and plants. I have recently acquired a strong liking for natural and organic products. So of late, after hours spent ogling at pictures of natural hair and beautiful skin, I have now progressed to wanting to find the best natural or organic products out there for my beauty regiment.

Interestingly enough, while hanging out with my grandma this December in the Gambia, I noticed what then to me seemed extremely “strange” beauty habits of hers. For her body and hair lotions were never that far away, or to put it simply…..where in her backyard.

Somehow, I was just ignorant to the fact that the “sap” of plants, meaning the gooey substance which she meticulously applied on her skin and hair was none other than the actual Aloe Vera and Shea Butter plants; which as we know are world renowned products for acquiring beautiful skin and hair.

So on any given day in the Gambia, it is that easy to head over to your backyard, and pluck fresh stems of Aloe Vera or Shea Butter and start your beauty regiment to flawless hair and skin. And in doing so, the finest cosmetic institutes in New York or Paris would have nothing on you 🙂

The natural Aloe Vera plant

For use on your hair or skin, cut off a few stems

About this quantity would last you for two weeks

Peel off the skin

The natural Aloe is found inside the skin of the plant

The whitish sap is the aloe vera liquid
