Welcome to 2016: Deciding Whether to “Live or Exist”

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

Dear Folks,

As the second month of the new year winds down, I bid you all best wishes for the rest of the year and hope it turns out to be a great one for all of us. As always, thank you for taking time to follow the blog “The African Expatriate”. Exactly four (4) years ago today, I started this journey on the blogosphere to capture my experiences of moving from the United States to South Africa for work as a young African professional.

Many moons have past now since that epic journey, and what a life changing experience it has been so far. Since then I have traveled, lived, studied and worked all over Africa, Europe, South America and currently find myself back in my comfort zone of New York City. However, in it all, one thing stands the test of time, and that is my passion to share with you all my adoration of the African Continent, it successes, failures, growing pains, and most importantly the young men and women who have braved the journey of moving back to Africa – to be the change that we so badly wish to see on the Continent.

I therefore live vicariously through my friends who are scattered all throughout the Continent, and it is there different journeys which I hope to share with you all in the 2016 version of the blog. What I have cooking up my sleeve this year on the blog is as follows:

The Back to Africa Series: where I interview young African professionals on their experiences after moving back home. This has been a permanent favorite of everyone, and this year it comes back with interviews from Guinea, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, among others. Essential Guides: essentially short travel guides of different cities in Africa coming from the mouth of the locals who live there (and not a travel guide writer). Because it just makes sense that you will get a better experience of a new place if it is explained to you by a local. So get ready to know all the best kept places in Dakar City, Joburg, Sweet Salone, Gabz-City, Banjul Baby, and the like. The Personal Experience: of the ups and downs of being an African in the Diaspora.

Dear Folks: – for 2016, I made a commitment to myself to “live” and not just to “exist” and in that I mean living: off the grid – simply – and in my cocoon of interesting experiences. Hope you enjoy reading all of my exploits. Thank you and keep coming back for more.

Your Girl, Juanita Nene xoxoxoxoxo
